What is Shopify?

I’m gonna start this off with the most popular question I get asked.

Is it like Etsy? Can I go to Shopify and find a bunch of shops and search for things I want/like?

Nope. Not at all. It’s more B2B, you go to Shopify when you want to set up an online store to sell your products. People will search for your store in the same way they search for other websites, by using search engines or social media platforms.

Ok lets get into the bones of it. If you have products or services to sell and you need an online facility where you can sell these items, then getting a Shopify store could be the way forward for you. It’s where you can build a website where customers will go to see product images, read descriptions, see how much they cost. They will also want to know things like shipping information or if you offer click and collect.

Getting Started
If you go to www.shopify.com, you will be able to enter your email address.
Here’s where you can start a free 30 day trail to see if Shopify is the right fit for you.

On the next page, you will be able to pick a store name for your Online Website. It will be a free domain name, and will end with .myshopify.com. If you use spaces in your name, they will be changed to underscores. For example; my_new_store.myshopify.com. You don’t need to add the .myshopify.com, it will be added automatically after you click Create Your Store.

quick tip; You can either use this free domain name to navigate customers to your store, or use a purchased domain instead – e.g. mynewstore.com . you can either purchase the new domain through Shopify or another domain hosting platform.

After these steps you will then have access to the Admin of your new online store. This is like the back office where you can manage Products/inventory, customers, orders, shipping settings, payment settings, and how your online store will look. You can also create pages for your online store (contact us, about etc) and blog posts, all of which will help build out your website and help you to be searchable on search engines.

Pricing
The Shopify platform is a business in itself, and does have a monthly subscription. You can find more information here –>https://www.shopify.ie/pricing. A rough guide can be found within the settings of your own admin.
